      Grand Ballroom D-F

Out in the Rural: A Mississippi Health Center and Its War on Poverty

Presentation of Dr. Ward's book "Out in the Rural: A Mississippi Health Center and Its War on Poverty" The book focuses on a Great Society project, the Tufts-Delta Health Center in Mound Bayou, Miss., the first rural community health center in the U.S. Situated in one of the most impoverished areas of the nation, its staff delivered a wide variety of health care programs to a mostly black population, including environmental, educational, and nutritional services. It became a model for the now more than 1,300 health centers that serve over 25 million Americans annually.

Dr. Ward's presentation will also include an examination of its early programs, including environmental health, nutrition and education programs, and the Farm Co-op. There will also be a discussion of how the issues of health care in the 1960s/70 relate to our current health care debates, including the role of the ACA in the Community Health movement today.

      Dr. Tom Ward
